Religious Education Program

Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me...For such is the kingdom of God"  Luke, 18:16

1.       What we’re all about

The Religious Education Program of Assumption Parish is a community based program staffed by volunteer Catechists and supervised by a Director of Religious Education (DRE).

We are committed to the importance of religious education for the children of the Parish.  Our hope and prayer is that the Program will be a meaningful experience of faith development for the children and their families and thereby be a source of blessing for the whole Parish Community.

The Catechists are members of the Parish community who have shown a special interest in teaching children the Catholic Faith and Christian values.  They have met the special criteria for being Catechists and have been appointed and blessed by the Pastor and Church community to this ministry

2.       Who can participate...

Children in grades 1 through 7 may attend.  If there are parents who wish to enroll their children in a kindergarten class, this could certainly be considered.

3. Registering your children...

Because of the need to orient the Catechists and purchase the needed texts, it is helpful to register the children in May and/or June prior to the beginning of classes in September.  However, we are open to registration at any time throughout the summer months.

There is a special diocesan registration form that is used to enroll each child into the Program.  Please call me, Sr. Maria, to set up an appointment for this purpose, to discuss details of the Program, and to answer any questions you may have.

4.       Attendance at classes…

The class schedules for the year are made as directed by the Religious Education Office of the Diocese of Brooklyn and are also compliant with the schedules of the elementary schools in the neighborhood.  You will be receiving a copy of the class schedule for your child as details are completed.  Your input in creating the class schedule is important and needed.  You will be contacted.

It is important that your child be present at each class.  If a class is missed, the Catechist will arrange to make up the missed class so that your child will not be left behind.

5. Books needed for the classes

The parish will provide the children’s texts and activity books.  A small fee of $125.00 will be asked for each child to help cover the cost.

6. Other activities in the parish...

The Christmas Pageant is held in early December.  All the children are invited to participate!  And parents, as well!

Spontaneous festive moments are occasionally prepared by the Catechists, e.g., birthdays, etc.

A celebration party is planned following the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

A closing liturgy of thanksgiving is held the last weekend in May.

7.       Meetings for the parents...

Twice each year, special meetings with the parents are planned by Father Carrano and myself.  These valuable meetings are informative, help set directions for the Program, and help  build a community spirit among the parents.
