Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
1. What is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults? The RCIA is an opportunity for adults to find out more about the Catholic Church. It is a process which encourages adults to determine if the Roman Catholic faith is the one to which God is calling them. 2. Who may attend the RCIA? Specifically, the RCIA is designed for: a Persons who have never been baptized. b Persons who have been baptized in another Christian faith tradition and are now interested in becoming Catholic. c. Persons who were baptized Catholic as children but received no further instruction in the Catholic faith. 3. How long is the RCIA process and what does it involved? The process is approximately nine months long, from September thru June. Attendance at the weekly sessions is a commitment each participant must make since new information of the Catholic Faith is presented weekly, and the community spirit of the group is better maintained when there is a commitment to be present. Attendance at parish and diocesan liturgical rituals is also necessary and very meaningful as one progresses toward the reception of the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Doing the assigned readings and taking a little more time for prayer throughout the week are encouraged during this time of spiritual preparation and discernment. 4. What topics are discussed? In summary, the person seeking to join the Catholic Church is introduced to beliefs, life, liturgy and ministry in the Catholic Community. 5. Are there any complications that I need to be aware of? An individual’s marriage situation may slow down one’s immediate participation in the RCIA process. We will advise you of any next steps you may need to take. 6. I heard that I need a sponsor? A sponsor, usually from the parish community, will accompany you on this faith journey. This person will attend the weekly sessions with you, along with the special rituals celebrated within the parish and diocesan church communities. 7. Is there any cost associated with the RCIA? None whatsoever. 8. Where do I sign up and when do we get started? Please call either Father James King or Mr. Gary Cushing at Assumption Church rectory to set up an initial interview: (718) 625-1161. The starting date and additional information will be given to you.
Sponsors The sponsor is a member of the parish community who journeys with the newcomer during the RCIA process. The sponsor helps by: ▪ offering a warm spirit of welcome into the parish ▪ introduces the newcomer to other members of the parish ▪ assisting the newcomer to the group sessions as much as possible ▪ being a guide, an example, by answering questions between the group sessions ▪ being a personal witness in living the Catholic Faith ▪ sharing the life and traditions of the Faith ▪ being a good listener RCIA group sessions begin in the Fall of each year. Registration is important for each participant. For more information, please call Father James King or Mister Gary Cushing at Assumption Church. Email: fr.jamesking@gmail.com
