Ministries

Eucharistic Ministers - proclaim the presence of Christ by helping with the distribution of Holy Communion at daily and Sunday Masses. They also bring Holy Communion to the homebound of the parish. Those interested in this ministry must attend a training workshop offered by the Diocese prior to being installed as a Eucharistic Minister.

Lectors - The Lector's primary duty is to proclaim the Word of God to the gathered assembly during the celebration of Mass or for other liturgical functions. Lectors should have a special love for God's word, be willing to train and prepare for this ministry, and have the ability to project their voices well over the Parish sound system. Occasional in-services are offered throughout the year.

Altar Servers - assist the Priest at Mass and at other liturgical functions. This ministry is open to all children age 12 and older who are willing to make a commitment to serve on a regular basis. Adult servers are also welcome.

Ministers of Hospitality - provide a welcoming environment for parishioners, friends, and families as they gather for various functions held in the Church Hall. These ministers set up the environment, make sure refreshments are available, welcome and lovingly serve the guests as needed.

Ministers of Welcoming/Ushers - greet members of the gathering assembly and provide a welcoming environment for Sunday liturgies. They assist people in finding seats, take up the Sunday offering, and invite parishioners to participate in the Offertory procession. A sincere, helpful attitude and a warm, friendly smile are required. Some training is provided.

Assumption Choir - Are you a tenor, alto or bass? Do you enjoy singing? The choir is composed of parishioners who enjoy and are dedicated to serving the Lord through their musical abilities. The Choir has regular practice times and sings at one of the Sunday Masses each week. Please consider sharing your vocal talents by joining the Parish Choir.

Catechists - are members of the Parish community who have shown a special interest in teaching children the Catholic Faith and Christian values. A Director of Religious Education teams closely with the Catechist and assists with any needs that may arise. Each Catechist has a substitute to "fall back on" if he or she is unable to be present. Catechists are chosen by their personal qualifications, interest and commitment to the Program.

Ministers of Care - bring comfort and support to those parishioners who are homebound. Through their occasional visits and phone calls, these ministers help the homebound feel that they continue to be vital members of the Parish.

Youth Ministries - Programs for Teens and Children

Christmas Pageant - The children of the religious education program celebrate the birthday of Christ each Christmas season in their own highly creative and original version of the Christmas story.

Volunteer Opportunities

Assumption Parish offers many ways to get involved. Here are just a few of the ongoing activities in the Parish. Join in and meet your neighbors.

Hospitality Sunday - From September through May, each week parishioners get together for an informal brunch after the 10:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday. Volunteers are needed to help greet new parishioners, organize the weekly events and set up.

Development Committee - This ongoing committee focuses on fundraising, advertising and public relations activities for the Parish.

Pastoral Council - Assumption's Pastoral Council serves as an advisory Board to the Pastor, offering advice and counsel on many different issues. In essence, they are the representatives of the parish and serve as their voice. Members are selected by the Pastor and current Council members and make a three-year commitment.

Special Events

Each year, Assumption Parish hosts many special events that allow its parishioners and others from Brooklyn Heights to meet and enjoy the fellowship and friendship that is the hallmark of Assumption. Be on the lookout for notices throughout the year for events such as:

Christmas Fair - This major fundraising event is held on the first Saturday in December. Volunteers are needed to help set up, organize the donated goods, man the tables and booths, and coordinate picture taking with Santa Claus. Volunteer, donate books and other household items or spend the day shopping for that special gift.

Christmas Giving Tree - Donate a new toy to help Catholic Charities of Brooklyn make the holiday brighter for boys and girls.

Mother's Day Baby Shower - In honor of Mother's Day, donate a new item to help the Center for Pregnant Women, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping expectant mothers of newborn infants gain the material and spiritual support they need to adequately care for their babies.

Pot Luck Supper - Held each Fall, this popular event brings parishioners together to enjoy the many culinary talents of their neighbors.

St. Patrick's Day Dinner and Dance - Each March, parishioners gather to celebrate St. Patrick and the contributions of Irish Americans in a joyous celebration of song and dance. Join your neighbors in a fun-filled evening of singing, dancing and a delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner.
