ULLRS SKI AT WINTER PARK
Sunny
skys, groomed runs, corduroy that lasted most of the days – what more
could one ask for a perfect skiing trip? Well, maybe for some
powder! While we did not have inches of fresh powder for those
who love it, thirty-one ULLRs had a great time at Winter Park.
Shortly
after arriving at the Vintage Hotel at the Winter Park Resort, we
gathered to plan our adventures for the week. Trip
Co-Chairs Nancy S. and Sharon M. welcomed several new and returning
ULLR skiers and led a review of the itinerary for the week. As
Ullrs Karen C. and Mike B. live in Colorado for the winter and know
Winter Park very well, Mike B. gave us advice on how to navigate around
and between the five skiing areas of the Resort. He highly
recommended skiing certain runs and strongly recommended avoiding other
runs. We followed his advice, and everyone came home walking
upright with no major injuries! Special thanks to Karen C. and
Mike B. for sharing their knowledge of Winter Park and the area.
Each
morning we had an exclusive private breakfast buffet when we made plans
for the day to ski, shop, eat, nap, hot tub, etc. Every day we
hopped on the Cabriolet to get from our Hotel to the Resort
Village. There we loaded wagons to get our “stuff” to the lifts
and locker storage. Enroute many wandered into shops and
restaurants and contributed to the economy.
Monday dawned with
cold temps and very strong winds with frequest gusts at more than 60
MPH. Some ULLRs braved the weather, but many said “no thanks” and
took the day off to explore the Resort Village and the town of Winter
Park. Later that afternoon we all gathered for a wine and cheese
complimentary apres party provided by the Vintage Hotel and Winter Park
Resort. During that gathering, we raised our glasses in
remembrance of our fellow ULLR skier friend Dick Dinneen.
The
sun shined and the winds subsided on Tuesday, so everyone was eager to
ski. WP grooms a lot of runs, and with few other skiers that day,
we enjoyed sunny corduroy nearly all day. It was wonderful!
Bonnie S. took an all-day ski lesson. Marlys S. enjoyed a
personal mountain tour. Like the Olympic boarder that nearly hit
a squirrel, Nancy S. sucessfully avoided “de-tailing” a fast moving
squirrel on one of the runs! Tuesday evening seventeen
Ullrs went to the ULLRS Tavern in Winter Park to enjoy some
socializing. The Tavern owner was delighted to meet us. She
has a brother who lives in the Twin Cities. We presented her with
an ULLR bandana, and she in turn presented us with an ULLRS Tavern
t-shirt. Look for Sharon M. to model it for us some time.
Wednesday
was another sunny warm ski day. By this time, lift operators had
noticed our ULLR bandanas, and were welcoming us as we boarded chair
lifts around the mountains. That evening we gathered for a group
photo, then boarded a bus to go to Smokin’ Moe’s in Winter Park for a
BBQ group dinner with a brownie Sunday for dessert. Lots of food
and full tummies! We were delighted to watch an outdoor light
show and warm ourselves around a fire pit before boarding a bus to take
us back to our hotel.
On Thursday, we again had sun and warm
temps. Seventeen ULLRs took time during the day to tour the
National Sports Center for the Disabled. See the related photos and story on the ULLR website.
Friday
was our last day. We skied, skied, skied and packed, packed,
packed. During the week, we skied the gentle green runs and
cruised at faster speeds down the groomed blue runs on Winter Park
Mountain and Mary Jane Mountain. We were awestruck with the views at
12,000 feet on the top of Mary Jane followed by glade skiing through
the trees. Yes, ULLR President Mary Jane skied Mary Jane!
Saturday
morning we had all our “stuff” down stairs at the Hotel ready to load
and board the bus at 5:45 am! We each had a box breakfast to eat
on the bus. We were a sleepy, tired, happy bunch of skiers who
had a wonderful week at Winter Park!
