ULLRS TOUR NSCD AT WINTER PARK
While
ULLRs were skiing at Winter Park, several took time off the slopes to
tour the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD).
The
NSCD provides therapeutic, adaptive sports and recreational programs
for people with disabilities of any age and any ability.
Established in 1970, the NSCD is one of the largest, premier
therapeutic recreation agencies in the world. Each year the NSCD serves
3,000 children and adults with disabilities who partake in the more
than 20 sports and recreational programs, from snow skiing and kayaking
to rafting and rock climbing. The NSCD has facilities at
Winter Park and at Mile High Stadium in Denver.
With
specially trained staff and volunteers, and its own adaptive equipment
lab, the NSCD teaches a variety of year-round sports and activities to
individuals with almost any physical, cognitive, emotional or
behavioral diagnosis. Winter Park Resort provides space for the
Center plus lift tickets for volunteers, etc. The Center fulfills
ADA requirements for the Resort. It is mutually beneficial to
both parties.
Today,
the NSCD is one of the largest outdoor therapeutic recreation agencies
in the world and trains many Paralympic athletes. Fifteen percent
of the NSCD’s revenue is from participant fees. Eighty-five
percent of its revenue comes from philanthropic gifts, grants, events,
and sponsorships. More than 200 scholarships are given each year
to the NSCD participants.
While
at the NSCD, ULLRs met with the Director and the Volunteer Coordinator
who led ULLRs on a tour of the Center. Trip co-chair Nancy S.
informed the Director and Volunteer Coordinator about our own ULLR Ski
for Light Foundation, our fundraising activities, and the types of
adaptive equipment we have provided through the generous support of our
ULLR members. ULLRs saw much adaptive NSCD equipment and learned
how the equipment is used and created or adapted for the needs of each
individual benefiting from the program. And, participating ULLRs
contributed to give a $130 donation to the Center.
