| HIKING BLUSTERY SCHAAR’S BLUFF While seven ULLRs indicated prior interest in the May 1 hike at Schaar’s Bluff, three were able to come. Weather was a big consideration. Out of concern for possible wet and muddy trails on Schaar’s Bluff, hike host Nancy S. monitored the weather forecast for several days. On the day of the hike, the trail conditions were fine – the wind was not! General wind speed was about 25 mph with gusts at more than 40 mph. The roaring sounds of those winds blowing through the trees was amazing! When we were more surrounded by trees, the wind was not noticeable. It was along the bluff edge that Jan S. and Jerry S. had to hang onto their hats. We enjoyed viewing the sky-blue waters and rushing currents of the Mississippi River, massive rocks, and flooded islands. We even met some new furry friends along the trails. After our hike, we drove to the Bierstube in Hastings for brats and schnitzel. Yummm! In spite of the wind, it was a great day to be outside. |
