WISCONSIN SNOWSHOE AND SKIING FUN Twelve
ULLRs traveled to Wausau for some winter fun in the snow on February
7-9 and were fortunate to have good weather and road conditions. Our
winter adventure began Tuesday with nine ULLRs snowshoeing at Nine Mile
Forest – one of whom, Mick G, rented snowshoes and snowshoed for the
first time! Nine Mile Forest is well known for its cross country
and snowshoe trails. Our nine ULLRs decided to explore a 2.5 mile
trail with lots of twists and turns through the woods. Although
we had a trail map, we soon discovered a definite lack of signs along
the trail which resulted in actually snowshoeing about 4 miles.
We were happy to eventually see a sign indicating we were on the trail
back to the Chalet. After checking into the
Stoney Creek Inn, several ULLRs relieved some sore muscles by soaking
in the huge hot tub. We later met for snacks followed by pizza,
salad, and dessert – all arranged by trip leader Nancy S, and as usual,
ULLRs also brought additional snacks and beverages to share. Yum! Like
many other businesses, the Stoney Creek Inn is experiencing a staff
shortage with current staff taking on additional job
responsibilities. ULLRs cheerfully gave beverage mixing
directions to those acting as bartenders. ULLRs
were excited Wednesday morning when they discovered the pancake-making
machine in the hotel breakfast area. You simply push a button and
watch the pancakes come rolling out of the machine onto your
plate. Nearly everyone sampled pancakes! Wednesday
dawned with warm sunshine and a clear blue sky – an absolutely perfect
day for skiing at Granite Peak where skiers 80+ ski free. (Four
of our twelve ULLRs enjoyed that privilege.) All runs were
groomed, so it was a fun day for cruising. The runs with
“rollers” were our favorites. Lots of smiles! Wearing
ULLR bandanas made it easy to spot each other and join with other ULLRs
on different runs. The hotel hot tub was a relaxing way to end
the afternoon after a great day of skiing fun. Our
group dinner that evening was at a restaurant across the street from
our hotel. Again, it was a business with a staff shortage that
resulted in reduced choices for dinner, but we all were very satisfied
with our meals. After dinner, we gathered in the hotel pool/hot
tub area to munch on snacks. As usual when ULLRs gather, there
were lots of shared stories and lots of laughter. On
Thursday, some ULLRs left for home in the morning, and others skied
again at Granite Peak until noon. Granite Peak is not a huge
resort, so it is possible to ski many of the runs in a couple of
hours! We did our absolute best to accomplish that! Granite Peak has been a destination for ULLRs for many years, and we will return! |
