Twenty
six ULLRs toured the National Weather Station in Chanhassen on Tuesday
Oct 25. We gained interesting insight into the complex process of
weather forecasting. Todd Krause, the Chief Meteorologist
responsible for public safety, explained how alerts are sounded for
severe events. Even park personnel overseeing reserved park
shelters are put on alert! We learned that the various TV
stations gather information independently with their own forecasting
and graphics companies, but do coordinate for severe weather events. A
highlight was watching the release and fast rise of a hydrogen filled
weather balloon which gathers upper atmosphere data, such as
temperature and humidity. Each day a balloon is released at 6AM
and 6PM from seventy stations around the country, which coordinates
national data. The balloon bursts at 17 miles and the radiosond,
the small transmitter, is parachuted back to earth, which avoids
injuries when landing! Now you know if you ever find one! It was a fascinating tour and Todd was impressed with our very engaged group! |
