An
earlier hike at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve was canceled due to icy
roads in the area, but hike leader Nancy S tried another date that
turned out to be perfect. Eight ULLRs came to Murphy-Hanrehan on
Monday, November 18.
The day was
cloudy and cool with little wind. ULLR hikers soon learned why
Nancy cautioned on the flier that the hike would include several short
and long steep hills. She even recommended hiking sticks.
On November 18, all eight ULLRs agreed this outing was definitely a
HIKE – not a walk! Bruce W’s tracking app said the group hiked
3.18 miles, but those few miles at times seemed like 10! About
midway through the hike, Nancy encouraged the group to hike the
remaining yards to the top of a long steep hill before finishing the
second part of the hike. While everyone whined a bit, all proudly
made it to the top!
Along the way, the ground
and trails were carpeted with brown oak leaves. There was a short
detour further into the woods to get around a flooded part of the
trail. A view of a lake provided glimpses of a beaver lodge and
dam and an eagle. Mike A told us how burls on trees are
formed. We marveled at the beauty of bright green moss next to
colorful rotting logs. We paused at a tree bent over the trail
like a complete arch, and there were many fallen trees propped up
against trees still standing.
Following the two-hour hike adventure, ULLRs convened at Porter Creek in Burnsville for lunch.
