May
13 was a beautiful day to be outside: sunny, warm, no bugs, and with a
nice walk through the woods at Terrace Oaks Park. Hike leader
Nancy S scheduled the hike so ULLRs could see what oak savannah
restoration looks like. Terrace Oaks Park is in the process of
restoring about 26 acres to oak savannah. We saw areas where
trees were marked with pink ribbons that said “Do Not Cut.”
Everything else in those areas was cleared. The Park will be
planting natural grasses and flowers. We also walked where no
clearing was done and where the tall trees and brush lined both sides
of the trail.
Due to recent rains and water
on the trail, we occasionally had to walk on strategically placed logs
and walk through the woods to get around the water. At times we
needed to climb over fallen trees blocking the trail. Our nine
ULLR hikers had good balance and don’t mind a little mud on their shoes!
It was a great hike! And, we finished our time together with lunch at Jensen’s Café in Burnsville.
