ULLRS ENCOUNTER HIGH WATERS ON CROSBY FARM HIKE
Before
driving down the hill to meet in the parking lot for the October 14
Crosby Farm hike, everyone stopped at the high overlook to view Fort
Snelling in the distance and the confluence of the Mississippi and
Minnesota rivers below. Then eight ULLRs and
a guest, the son of hike leader Nancy S, walked along the Mississippi
River bottoms marveling at all the greenery down there compared to the
abundance of brightly colored leaves seen on other ULLR hikes.
The trail was crowded with hikers and bikers. We frequently
called out "biker up" and "biker back" notifications to our group. Magnificent
tall cottonwood trees with giant tree trunks towered above us. We
saw many large logs of old trees that had fallen years ago or that had
fallen into and were braced by other still-standing trees.
Cottonwood leaves on the trail provided lots of crunchy sounds as we
walked. On a side trail that circled a pond, we saw lots of geese and an eagle nest high up in the trees. The
Mississippi and other MN rivers had crested a couple of days earlier
causing the portion of trail closest to the River to be closed due to
high water, but we walked as far as possible towards the River from
both ends to see the water. When we turned
around at the far end of the trail to head back, we looked at the area
where goats had been fenced during the summer to eat and reduce ground
cover including buckthorn. A week
prior to the October 14 Crosby Farm hike, rain was predicted, but the
rain held off until after our lunch at Buca di Beppo which is noted for
very large portion servings. Everyone went home happily with a
to-go box. |
