| A DAY AT THE GERMAN AMERICAN INSTITUTE Biking, hiking, bratwurst and beer was the order of the day. It was a hot and humid day, in the 90's with a stiff breeze. 3 hardy bikers rode the "Manfred Deutsch Memorial Ride" through St Paul neighborhood streets that were well shaded over to the Mississippi River. We headed back to the GAI winding our way over to Summit Avenue and found a shaded picnic table where we could relax. Soon many more Ullrs started to show up, to enjoy the food and entertainment. Many of us enjoyed the delicious brats, homemade sauerkraut and German potato salad, but some skipped right to the yummy desserts. Of course we had a pitcher or two of good draft German beer to wash it down. Some of the group wanted to watch a demo on making sauerkraut or potato pancakes. There were various demos going on all day, as well as many wonderful musical groups. One group that was especially interesting was the KJO German Youth Orchestra. I had a chance to talk to one of the young men and I learned they were from an area close to Stuttgart, Germany. They were young men and women in high school and were touring for 10 days in the Twin Cities entertaining at different venues. I asked how they liked our cities and the response was, "everyone is so nice and comes up to talk to us. We are not used to that in our city". Most of the group spoke excellent English.
