Much
of downtown Lanesboro is a part of the National Register of Historic
Places. It is known as the Bed and Breakfast Capital of
Minnesota. This is where 27 Ullrs enjoyed 3 perfect summer days
of biking, socializing and cultural events.
Many
of the group arrived on Sunday to enjoy a bike ride. We wanted to
be sure to get to Whalan for a piece of delicious pie. Four of us
ventured further east of Whalan on Sunday and much to our surprise,
there was a rattlesnake stretched across the trail. We were happy
that it was busy sunning itself so that we got past it safely.
Sunday
evening many of us enjoyed dinner in Preston at the Branding
Iron. Monday after breakfast the group scattered. It was
difficult to decide which beautiful trail to enjoy. The Root
River State Bike Trail is likely the most scenic trail in the
state. There are numerous bridges crossing branches of the Root
River, the trails wind thru bluffs and farm land and have plenty of
shade. One group became very ambitious and decided to bike all
the way to Harmony, which was just under 50 miles round trip from the
Green Gables Inn. That route seems to have the steepest
grades. All but one of the group made it up all the hills, had a
great lunch and biked back mostly downhill in time to enjoy appetizers
and bragging rights. Many others in the group found time to shop
in downtown Lanesboro and Whalen finding some beautiful pieces of
jewelry and other buys.
Monday night we enjoyed
the charming and touching musical comedy "Souvenir" at the Commonweal
Theater. Tuesday was another beautiful day so after a hardy
breakfast many in the group decided to take one last bike ride before
heading home.
The Lanesboro biking trip
continues to be enjoyed by all that participate. Next year's trip
is already on the schedule starting the last Sunday in August.
Thanks to all of you that came to enjoy the trip and for all of the
help with food and beverages.
