ULLR Outing at Sommerfest
With
temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, 44 Ullrs assembled at
Orchestra Hall for their annual excursion to Sommerfest. We had
planned to meet on Peavey Plaza but wisely decided to congregate inside
(temperatures again!). The staff at Orchestra Hall met us at the
door early so that we could get a table in the Atrium. There we
put up our “balloons” so that the rest of the group could find us
easily. Music and dancing in the Atrium got all of us eager to
attend the concert. And what a concert it was!
The
title was “A Night in the Tropics” featuring “hot” music from “hot”
spots---Cuba. Brazil, Hawaii, Greece to name a few. Beautiful
graphics were projected on the wall behind the orchestra guiding
participants through the presentations. Charles Lazarus, renowned
trumpeter, was the featured performer with renditions of familiar and
classic jazz favorites drawing rounds of applause from the opening
number to the last curtain call.
We Ullrs
like to end the Sommerfest evening with an after-concert libation in
front of Brits across the Mall but construction all along that avenue
moved us from our usual curb-side tables to Brits’ roof-top.
Luckily some young party-goers gave up their spot for us so we could
continue our tradition of a “final one for the night”! We
toasted the Minnesota Orchestra, Charles Lazarus and all performers
before heading home after a great evening.
