ULLRS COLLECT FOR TOYS FOR TOTS AND HELP AT THE WAREHOUSE
Apparently
ULLRs like to shop for kids’ toys and games. ULLRs also are
generous. At this year’s Holiday Ball, ULLRs donated five large
bags of toys and games plus $245 in cash donations to the Marine Toys
for Tots program.
Then ten ULLRs and one guest came
to the Toys for Tots warehouse in Eagan to help sort and pack
toys. We picked up mounds of toys, found the age range on the
packaging, and took the toys to age-range bins for girls and
boys. There were lots of Star Wars toys this year and many Barbie
dolls. Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars filled the stocking stuffers
bin. Footballs and soccer balls abounded. Games ranged from
a simple deck of cards to complicated games to stimulate
thinking. Nail polish collections will show up on the hands of
young girls and teens.
While the bins were being
filled, some ULLRs did the next step which was to pack all those toys
from the bins into large boxes which are distributed to approved
organizations for distribution to families. For this job, the
most important thing is to remember to count the toys put into the
boxes, so each box can be properly labeled. As a general rule,
one does not interrupt this process as it is so easy to forget the
count – especially when a stocking stuffer box can hold over 200 small
items!
In a couple of hours, we and some other
volunteers had the toys cleared from the floor and the boxes
packed. Some ULLRs headed for home or other events. A few
of us went to Jake’s for beverages and lunch/dinner.
So,
through actual donations of toys and cash plus working at the Toys for
Tots warehouse, ULLRs once again have brightened the lives of many
children this Christmas.
