July
10th was a perfect biking day and John Stiefel took the group of 15
bikers over to Minnehaha Falls to see the raging falls, then we headed
north to the U of M. We wound our way thru the U and over to the
Milwaukee Avenue Historic District, located in the Seward neighborhood.
The district comprises two city blocks
of small homes on quarter-sized lots. These houses were built
between 1884 and 1890 by William Ragan, a Minneapolis real estate
speculator. Built for lower income residents, the houses
deteriorated towards the end of WWII. The houses were saved from
demolition in the 1970s and are now on the National Register of
Historic Places. They fall under the federal protection and
rehabilitation that comes with this designation. Today the houses
sit along a bike and pedestrian friendly mall on which motor traffic is
prohibited.
The group picture
attached is taken in front of the home of Dale Wood, a lifelong
resident of the neighborhood (4th from the left). Dale shared his
knowledge of the neighborhood with us.
Thank you John Stiefel for a great and interesting ride.
