“Let
it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!” And it did, and it did, and
it did! Instead of calling Steamboat “Ski-Town USA”, it should be
called “Snow-Town USA.” Arriving
on Sunday with sunny, beautiful blue skies, it was a scenic drive to
Steamboat Springs via Rabbit Ears Pass. After settling in the
condos, we enjoyed a pizza party while watching the lopsided Super Bowl
game. Can you believe that it was played over and over on local
TV? Wasn’t once more than enough?
Skiing the next two
days proved difficult with the constant snowfall. Unfortuantely,
we had three injuries due to the large amount of snow. “Be
careful what you wish for.” We wish for snow, and when we
get it, “ouch!” The term “Rubber Legs” was said more than
once. Although, it didn’t prevent Bob Higgins, MaryAnn Schwebel,
and Tom Roberts from hitting the mogul runs. The
Ore House served us a delicious group dinner on Tuesday night.
Everyone enjoyed getting together for the meal. Skiing Wednesday
was a “Slice of Heaven, with those beautiful blue skies and groomed
runs. Some of us ventured “into the woods” on the backside, fresh
and knee deep powder.
That evening was the beginning of
the Steamboat Winter Carnival. Amateur ski jumping could be seen
right in town at the Howelsen ski area. Carl Howelsen, is the
“Father of Skiing in Colorado.” He immigrated to the US from
Norway as the “flying man” and thrilled spectators with “ski sailing”
in the Barnum and Bailey Circus. This year’s Olympic flag bearer,
Todd Lodwick hails from Steamboat Springs. Some of us snowshoed
the trails in that park. Many
of our group gathered at a local establishment to watch the ski
jumping, and partake in happy hour libations, but “what happens in
Steamboat, stays in Steamboat.” They met some Fire Fighters from
Amarillo, Texas. Gus Bjorklund and Patty Fitzgerald made them
honorary ULLRs. They gave us Fire Department T-Shirts. Thursday
was another challenging day of skiing. That evening was an
optional sleigh ride dinner at Haymaker Golf Course. We were
pulled through the course by a pair of majestic Belgian Blonde horses,
“the boys,” who were a bit frisky and gave the driver a little
trouble. The three course meal that followed was fabulous. Friday
was another snowy day on the mountain. It did quit snowing in
time for our ride up the gondola for a Western BBQ and dancing.
True to ULLR tradition, we closed up the dancing, and were the last
ones down the mountain! Luckily, the weather cooperated on
Saturday, and we were able to arrive at the Denver Airport in plenty of
time for our flight home. A big Thank You to all the participants of the Steamboat Trip! Patty Fitzgerald and Karen Holmquist |
