ULLRs Learn about the Human Body Did you know… • When you sneeze, you produce wind speed equal to a tornado or hurricane. • If you laid your blood vessels end-to-end, they would circle the earth twice. • At every stage of life, the heart is about the size of a closed fist. • You have 300 bones at birth, but 206 bones as an adult. • Your heart beats approximately 35 million time in a year. Thirteen
ULLRs and a guest spent a couple of hours on April 2nd re-learning the
science of the human body at the Body Worlds Exhibit at the Science
Museum of Minnesota. We saw bones, muscles, tendons, nerves,
blood vessels, and organs. We saw the effects of good health
(drink red wine), poor health (be careful to limit the amount of
alcohol consumed), and lifestyle choices (eat healthy and exercise). We
were fascinated with the athletic poses that illustrated the use of
muscle systems while playing sports. We would have liked to see a
skier! The Body Worlds exhibit and the “Human Body” film in the
Omnitheatre increased our knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Following
the exhibit and film, most of the group went to Patrick McGovern’s
where Bill Kansas joined us for beverages and dinner. What did we
order? Two people had red wine. Some ULLRs drank no
alcohol, but several enjoyed special beers. Some ordered
healthy salads, but we also saw lots of French fries on plates.
Everyone did walk from the Museum to the restaurant and back to our
cars, so we got some exercise. So, did we learn anything from our
Museum visit? You be the judge!
