This was my 3rd consecutive French Park ski event that I have hosted, each within a week of the winter solstice: Saturday Dec 18, 2010, Saturday Dec 17, 2011, and Sunday Dec 16, 2012.  This year looked like the skiing would actually happen, as 10 plus inches of snow fell on the French Park trails only a week ago.

But that darn low pressure system, coupled with warm moisture, was followed by warmer than usual temperatures for December and dumped about 0.37 inches of RAIN on the trails on Saturday.  The trails were closed on Saturday and with no snowfall overnight, the trails were also closed Sunday.  But there was sufficient snow in the snowshoe area and walking paths to accommodate 5 ULLRs who did show up.  We hit the trails at 11 am, with a 30 degree temperature.

Bill L, Jim H, Pam A, Barb K and George H, (organizer & photographer) found the hiking to be enjoyable and invigorating.  I was sure Bill had spooked a deer, but Jim thought that the deer's swift departure from the area was because of the wolf that was in hot pursuit of the deer.  Pam and Barb said they did not see, or hear, the deer or the wolf.

The snow was soft and the hiking on existing snowshoe trails, or making our own gave us the feeling of being in the deep woods.  No injuries, no lost mittens, no unruly ULLRs, just a wonderful day in the woods.   After about an hour and a half, we headed to Chili's for food.

Thanks Bill, Jim, Pam and Barb for joining me.
George H.
