ULLR TOYS FOR TOTS WAREHOUSE VOLUNTEERS

On Tuesday December 6, nineteen ULLRs lived their childhood dreams to be in a warehouse filled with toys!  These hardy ULLRs listened with respect to the Marines who gave us our orders for the afternoon: Sort and pack toys.

Sounds simple--well, not totally true.  No toys allowed that could be called weapons.  Food items in a different box.  Liquids in this box.  Clothing in that box.  What is this toy?  Stocking stuffers over there.  Where is the box for books?  Give the girls some tools, and give the boys some crafts.  No R-rated DVDs.  Backpacks in the box against the back wall.  Are we done yet?  No!  Here come some more toys!

We bent, sat on the floor, climbed into sorting bins, picked up armloads of toys--dropped some and picked them up again, packed toys in boxes, marked boxes, talked and laughed.

When we were done, we gathered at Granite City for refreshments and sustenance.  We all agreed it felt good in this small way to help children and families have a happier Christmas.  Everyone said we should do this again next year!

Earlier Nancy Sand delivered twelve bags of toys and more than $300 in cash donations to the Toys for Tots warehouse.  These were collected at the ULLR November general meeting and at the Holiday Ball.  Thanks ULLRs!
