Twenty-seven ULLRs were part of 182 participants from member clubs of the Midwest Sport/Ski Council attending the Dec 11-13, 2009 Winter Carnival. The 7 am bus had plenty of room in the passenger compartment for the 39 passengers and boot bags of those skiing on Friday. Einstein bagels and orange juice provided nourishment for those not having had time to eat breakfast.
Fourteen ULLRs skied for 4 hours on Friday afternoon; 33 participants skied that day and we had the runs almost all to ourselves.
Although Indianhead had been busy making snow, there were fewer runs open on this trip than the previous two years, due to the late arrival of natural snowfall. The snow on the groomed runs was very good, but some runs we expected to be groomed overnight, weren’t.
ULLRs won the Club Racing trophy at the previous 2008 Winter Carnival, and will retain the trophy for another year. The NASTAR course wasn’t open due to the late arrival of snow in the UP, and the trophy wasn’t awarded this season. An unofficial race was held on another run, with the timing done by stopwatch.
The poker run, human slalom, and wine party on the hill were again fun events. After a few glasses of wine were had, the turtle races were held at the same location. There were three heats, a male single, a female single, and a couples race. After encouraging our members to participate in this race, Pam Anderson and John Egan were talked into entering it. Pam and John, who hadn’t participated in any previous turtle races, beat out the younger participants including some who had practiced for it, and they ended up winning the couples event with each of them receiving a $100 certificate good for any MSC event.
