Beautiful weather, wonderful company and good food made for another excellent ULLR weekend.
34 ULLRS trekked their way to Tofte on Labor Day weekend for three, warm, clear days of hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail. We gathered Friday night to discuss hiking options and share a glass of wine.
Saturday morning after breakfast, the majority of the group motored down to Tettegouche State Park to hike a 5.5 mile loop to Mic Mac Lake and Mt. Baldy (at the top was the only place all weekend that I had cell phone reception). Jerry Swanberg led the group up and down through the woods, stopping at many scenic overlooks, until we came to the campground area. We had picnic tables where we could munch down our lunches and rest our weary legs. There was even an outhouse!
A smaller group also drove to Tettegouche and hiked in the park on state park trails. Karen Clarke, Jan Cady, Ellise Lamb and Nadine Carr even had time to do an “Etch-A-Sketch” drawing at an activity area on the trail. Nadine showed a fellow hiker how to “cast on” yarn on a knitting needle. That night after a welcome hot tub soak, we had a dinner of “Sven and Ole’s” pizza. We ended the night with a pretty big “Farkle” group throwing the dice.
Hiking Sunday was a bit closer to Tofte. We had breakfast, and drove to the Temperance River Trailhead. After a beautiful climb along the swirling river, Lee Erickson led us into the woods and along the ridge. We continued until we reached the Cross River, then stated downhill, back to the Trailhead. It was a long hike of 6.3 miles. More hot tub action to sooth the tired legs followed. We had an excellent dinner that night at the Blue Fin Restaurant.
Monday was a scattering of the group, with more hiking, sight seeing, or shopping. Some of us stopped at Jay Cooke State Park and did a small hike along the St. Louis River. We had lunch at the Banning Junction restaurant, and headed home.
Thanks to Barb Sedges and Barb Kolbe for helping out with the food, and Jerry Swanberg and Lee Erickson for leading the hikes. Thanks to all of you that came on the trip! “A good time was had by all!”
