Wow, the ULLR Foundation had a great celebration for its 25th Anniversary on Sunday, June 28!  Over 80 Ullrs enjoyed a Hawaiian Luau “Minnesota style!”  Divine Swine catered a tasty Hawaiian buffet, Johnny Pineapple on ukulele and Max on clarinet provided music and lots of laughs, and lovely Hula dancer Makamai was a big hit.  A sea of bright colored Hawaiian outfits and Hawaiian décor and music set the mood for a most enjoyable evening!

Gus Bjorklund and Nancy Kastner greeted us at the door with Mai Tai’s.  Jim Henn took center stage with the “Ulla” Hula dance line!  Did anyone else notice Lorri’s coconut bra slipping?  Tom Larkin took retired dentist ribbing in classy style.  Lorna Higgins shared the spotlight moving right along with Makamai.

Congratulations to Barb Kolbe for winning the “Earth, Wind and Fire” and “Chicago” concert tickets!  Two dinner gift cards to Cosmos and Broadstreet Restaurant in the Graves 601 Hotel were won by Jean Berry and Diane Erlandson.  Ed Nightingale was honored as a “Friend of the Foundation” for his outstanding contribution and leadership.

A brieft history of ULLR “Ski for Light” Foundation beginnings was given by Bill Elsholtz, Ullr President 1971-72.  Joan read emails from Letty Bromenschenkel, Ullr President 1973-74, who signed the original by-laws, and from Damaris Frank, who started the “Giving Back” Auction in 1973, which continued for the next twenty years.  Several others gave tributes to the ULLR Foundation.  Marvin Souba shared photo albums of Foundation dinners.

Our rich history began in 1973, 36 years ago, with auctions to raise funds to purchase “sit-skis,” the first one being presented to a teenage amputee in 1973.  Besides benefitting disabled skiers, our volunteering included the “Ski for Light” MSC program for blind skiers, and the Hearing Impaired Skiers’ program at Cedar Hills Ski area in Eden Prairie.  The Foundation has raised well over $100, 000 to benefit disabled active individuals over the years.  We have branched out beyond downhill ski equipment to providing adaptive equipment for cross country skiing, canoeing, horse back riding, biking, race running, water skiing, exercising, swimming, and our latest, golfing; also wheelchairs, camp scholarships, “Helping Paws,” and MS Society.

Thank you to the dedicated, creative ULLR Foundation Board and Erl Erlandson, Sharon Marini, Marty Wilkes, Barb Kolbe, Betts Carter and Dave Lyons for their extra helping hands for making this a successful and memorable celebration.
