Granite Peak: What a great Ski area! 700 ft of vertical, 73 runs, 6 chair lifts (including a high speed six-pack), and a three foot base. They also had 6” of snow just before 28 ULLRs arrived on Sunday April 22. We had two wonderful sunny days skiing on some great groomed snow without the weekend crowds. There were many long cruisers and plenty of steep runs (which I love). We also got a terrific deal on lift tickets. Eight of the group went cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on Tuesday at the spectacular “Nine Mile Forest”, located on the back side of the ski area in Rib Mountain State Park.
Our hotel, the Courtyard Marriot in Wausau, was wonderful, including a fantastic buffet breakfast. We headed out to Wausau’s 2510 Restaurant both nights for a group dinner, and started out in the bar with an incredible 2-for-1 special for $3 (Mon - Bloody Marys / Tues - Margaritas). The Hotel gave us a 10% discount and the Ski Area gave us a free glass of wine. Our group really got along, partied hard like the days of old, and everyone had a grand time! I strongly recommend Granite Peak, the second largest ski are in the Midwest (trailing only Lutsen), and only a three-hour drive.
