GIANTS RIDGE – SKIING AT THE NORTH POLE!

This year, 29 Ullrs rode the bus up to Giants Ridge with much trepidation about the weather, as it was forecast to be windy and cold all weekend.  However, everyone decided to be brave and try Saturday at least.  After we arrived Friday night, a bunch of Ullrs kept the Big Woody combo playing well after their scheduled quitting time, all the while dancing on the carpeting.

Boy did we luck out!  Saturday morning was relatively warm and snowy, so we all had a good time playing in the snow.  Ten or eleven folks even did the Human Slalom.  Jerry Schuster and Cheryl Ostlund did both cross country and downhill.  Judy Burich, Sandra Shearer, Pam Giebink and Dave Simpson did only cross country and Linda Nelson went snowshoeing.  By afternoon the weather turned windy and blustery, blowing all the new snow off the hills and practically blowing you to the next lift if you were going in the right direction!

That evening we had a delicious buffet dinner downstairs in the Vermilion North room which was decorated beautifully.  We had three entrees.  The pecan encrusted walleye was “to die for” and the beef was delicious too.  However, we had difficulty finding any chicken in the champagne chicken!  After that we enjoyed the entertainment in the Sticks Lounge again, while some played a few card games.

Sunday dawned sunny, but VERY cold and windy, so imagine our surprise when we saw Dave Simpson fly by on his cross country skies at eight in the morning!  The snow was well groomed as usual, but it was “face mask” weather, therefore, not everyone decided to ski.  Mary Jane said she quit early because her goggles frosted up.  Ken Marini, Jerry and Barb skied the longest – about 10 runs.  Kay Sommers, Barb, Jerry, and I did a quick Human Slalom, an hour earlier than scheduled – the shortest one in Ullr history with only four people!  The last skiers quit at 12:30 pm, so as to leave early and get home in the daylight in case we had difficulty starting our cars.  Everyone said they had a great weekend.  Despite the cold, you missed some great skiing!
