Another Wonderful Sommerfest
By Ray & Carol

Another glorious night---another glorious concert.  Thirly-Seven ULLRs gathered on the Plaza outside of Orchestra Hall for what has become our annual Sommerfest outing.  Blue and gold balloons greeted Ullrs as they arrived at the plaza.  Jean Berry was the first one there and she commandeered wonderful tables for us close to the band and the reflecting pool.  The music was loud but fun as was the “people watching.”  We enjoyed sipping, supping, and chatting before entering Orchestra Hall for the concert.  The concert was entitled “Broadway Swings” and swing it did!!!!!  Wonderful music included orchestral pieces of Gershwin and Bernstein and soloists Tony DeSare, young, handsome, and romantic, and Anne Hampton Callaway---what a blockbuster voice she has.  After recalls and urging by the applauding audience, Callaway sang one encore.  The seating for the ULLR group was great---primarily rows 8 and 9----which made seeing and hearing the soloists and the Orchestra perfectly as we listened to the renditions presented by “the best orchestra in the world”—our Minnesota Orchestra.

It was not too busy a night in Downtown Minneapolis so we were able to find tables at Brit’s for an after-concert drink.  Several ULLRs gathered for libations.  Everyone agreed that the evening had been wonderful---good food, great camaraderie, and an outstanding concert.  One sad note---as we were enjoying ourselves on the Plaza, the news about the 35W bridge collapse bubbled through the crowd.  We breathed easier when all Ullrs arrived safe and sound.  Our hearts go out to victims, families, and workers of that horrible tragedy.
