| On our drive up to Michigan, there was very little snow on the ground until we reached Ironwood. From there on, the snow steadily deepened until we arrived at Indianhead, which had an 18 to 44” base.
After unpacking, we proceeded to Dudley’s Saloon for drinks and dancing. We met an older group of skiers from the Vagabond Ski Club of Powaukee, WI. Their website lists 1200 active members, and their members age is about the same as Ullr’s. Although the band at Dudley’s wasn’t as good as previous years, it wasn’t bad, and as the evening progressed and after a couple of drinks, they seemed to get better. Saturday was cold and breezy. Indianhead was 100% open and the snow conditions all day were very good. Besides our lunch break, we took additional breaks in the morning and afternoon to warm up. Saturday evening’s dinner was a pizza/salad party at the beautiful secluded home of former Ullr members Gordy and Ann Schelde. We parked at the bottom of the long, curving, uphill driveway to their home, where Gordy was waiting with his tractor and hay wagon for a ride up. We also skied with Ann and Gordy at Indianhead. Sunday was cloudy and warmer. We skied at Whitecap, which was only 80% open. As the day progressed the snow softened and it snowed lightly midday, making the skiing conditions very good in the afternoon. There was an occasional tiny lift line at Indianhead, and no lift lines at all at Whitecap. Although it is nice to ski right up to the chair, it was sad to see the small number of people skiing on the weekend. The numbers seem to be decreasing each year, and I doubt that Whitecap made any profit on Sunday. It makes you wonder how many people ski there mid-week. Blackjack Ski Resort is for sale, and this season is only open Friday thru Monday. We had a close-knit group, and the majority of the time we skied together throughout both days. All the participants were prompt, fun to be with, and made the trip very enjoyable. |
