Labor Day Weekend happened to be the perfect time to go hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT).  Twenty-six ULLRS, including new members Karen Chemotti and Lucy Wang, met in Two Harbors to spend the warm, sunny, weekend hiking some of the more than 200 miles of trails starting in Carlton and extending to the Minnesota/Canadian border.

The first day we hiked the Split Rock River loop of five miles.  Turned around talking while walking on the rugged up and down trail, proved to be a painful lesson as this leader caught her toe on a root, and went sailing through the air.  Luckily, I was able to hike out without embarrassing myself further.  As we finished hiking with time to spare, (Cheryl Ostlund gets the speedy hiker award for finishing first ) some of the group went shopping, while others took a hot tub and swim in the pool, or played mini golf.  That evening a group dinner at Pizza Hut with a variety of pizzas and salad bar was plenty filling.

The second day we hiked the Cove Point Loop over five miles of climbing over 700 feet in elevation.  We thought it to be a harder hike the previous day, however, the gradual climb was actually easier than the ups and down of the Split Rock River Loop.  Part of the group led by Joella Wilson spent the day exploring the Tettegouche State Park trails.  They climbed to Mic Mac, an old logging camp, and hiked out to Shovel Point on the shore of Lake Superior.  Others led by Jan Staples went birding at Eagle Ridge outside of Duluth.  More relaxing and shopping followed the hikes.  We enjoyed a group dinner that evening at the Black Woods Restaurant in Two Harbors.

The third day of the weekend the group split up as some of us traveled to Jay Cooke State to explore the beautiful outcrops of rock and the flowing river, while others began the trip home.  Thanks to all on the trip for making it a great weekend!
