Ullrs go to Alaska

by Jim Habeck

On July 29, 12 Ullrs started a twelve-day trip to Alaska.  We flew to Seattle, and then took a bus to Vancouver.

We boarded the Sapphire Princess.  This boat is only two years old.  It is 952 feet long, and holds 2,670 passengers.  The food was great and so was the crew.  The crew was from all over the world.  The first part of the trip was through the Inland Passage.  This part of trip was real smooth.  On the ocean, the boat took the swells and waves real easy.  No one got seasick.

Our first stop was Ketchikan.  At this stop, as the other stops, the group kind of split up and took one of the tours of their own choice.  Some went on whale watch trips, some flew over glaciers.  Train trips.  Village tours.  Of course shopping.  At Ketchikan while we were standing in line to get back on the boat it started to rain.  This was the only major rain we had on the trip.

Our two other major stops were Juneau and Skagway.  Skagway is a cute little town of only 750 people.  At night we would go to one of the lounges on board and have a couple of cocktails and discuss the day’s adventures.  Drinks were reasonably priced on the ship.

The ship cruised up Glacier Bay and College Fjord to look at glaciers.  When we were at the end of College Fjord we hit our coldest weather.  The temperature at the end was in the 30’s.  Warm clothes were definitely needed.

At Whittier we got off the boat and took an all train trip to Denali.  We had a short bus tour of Denali.  We saw a couple of caribou off in the distance.  Most of the other wildlife was hiding.  When we got to the town of Talkeetna we could see Mt McKinley was pretty clear, so 7 of us took airplane tours around the mountain.  The pilot said that this was only the fifth day the mountain was this clear this summer.

We finished out trip in Anchorage.  Weather was sunny 74 degrees.  Record for that day is 78.  More good luck.  Everyone had a great time.
