Sommerfest – Wunderbar!
By Ray & Carol
What a glorious night we had as 33 ULLRs gathered together on Peavey Plaza on a lovely July 22nd evening for what has become our annual Sommerfest outing. Blue and gold star balloons greeted those attending as they arrived at the plaza. We had reserved tables by the band and next to the reflecting pool. The music, though loud, was great as was the “people watching” and the energetic ‘Salsa Dancers’ were sensational. Lorri Christenson and Chris Andersen were the only brave souls of our group to join the dancing. We enjoyed two hours of sip, sup and chat before entering Orchestra Hall for the concert.
The concert was entitled “Strauss Spectacular” and spectacular it was!!!!! The music was wonderful---waltzes and polkas (Polkas?) from Strauss, violin solos, and a soprano vocalist with more than a touch of “comedy” in her numbers. Andrew Litton, the very talented conductor, was entertaining and informative, as always, with his usual infusion of humor also. After four recalls by the appreciative audience, the orchestra responded with a rousing encore. The seating for the ULLR group was perfect---rows 7, 8, and 9---so we could see the soloists and the Minnesota Orchestra as we listened to the wonderful renditions presented by “the best Orchestra in the world”-- according to Mr. Litton. I think everyone was in agreement with him on that score (no pun intended)!
It was a busy Saturday night in Downtown Minneapolis and the weather could not have been nicer. Our plan to join at Brit’s for after-concert dessert and drink didn’t pan out since the sidewalk café was overflowing. Several ULLRs stayed at the plaza for libations and listened to an “after concert” concert. Everyone agreed that the evening had been wonderful---good food, great camaraderie, and an outstanding concert.
