“The Northern lights have seen queer sights but the queerest they ever did see, was the night on the marge of the lake so large when Ullrs went to sea".* Why? Because at 2 AM 17 Ullrs were sprawled out on the decks of our sailboats in our night clothes (such as they were) watching a fantastic display of the northern lights. The shimmering, shifting, flashing lights radiated from a spot directly overhead and filled almost the entire sky. It was the first time for some and one of the best ever for the others.
But that was just the frosting on the cake for a fantastic weekend of sailing. The 15 to 20 knot winds were perfect. We introduced the new sailors to the sea caves on Devils and Sand Islands, visited an old fishing camp, toured light houses, and swam (skinny dipped?– we’ll never tell) in the icy water. And the weekend wasn't without some other excitement. At our first night's anchorage at South Twin we had a thunderstorm with plenty of lightning and booming thunder which kept us from rafting together to share stories (lies -?). A few minor mishaps such as a broken halyard, an overheating engine and lake bottoms that reached up and grabbed our keels only added to the fun.
And oh yes, we ate and drank very well. And everybody behaved pretty well so there were no keel haulings. It was a trip we will not soon forget!
