Text Box: LITURGY NEWS

What is in a color? White, Red, Green, Violet, Rose and Black (sometimes Blue and Gold)… ever wonder why they appear on the altar during the year? As we started Ordinary Time, green became the liturgical color that is worn. But what does green have to do with our celebrations? Well, green is a color that is symbolic of hope and growth. Ordinary time is our counted (ordinal) time. It is a time for us to grow in our faith as we recount the life of Jesus. When we think of green what comes to mind? Spring time? Youth? Newness? Just as spring brings back the color green all around us, the green at our liturgies should help us feel invigorated and refreshed in our faith life.
This week we celebrate the Feasts of Sts. Peter and Paul the apostles. This feast brings another special color. It is not the green of ordinary time, but it is red which represents the blood of the martyrs that was spilt for their faith in Christ Jesus. Red also represents the Holy Spirit and fire. It helps us find that burning passion for our Lord. It is meant to inspire us to follow the apostles examples and devote ourselves to our Savior.
How does red or green affect you? God speaks to us in so many glorious ways, even in the colors we use to celebrate our weekly liturgies. We will look at other colors of the liturgical year as their seasons come around, but for now, why not be a part of our discussion of liturgy. Send questions and comments to:

Let’s live our faith together.
