So, why do we sing at Mass? There are so many reasons. To start with, let’s look at what it says in the Bible. If we look in the Book of Psalms, we see many examples of why we should sing. It is pointed out in Psalm 150 that we should give praise to the Lord with all kinds of instruments and at it’s conclusion it says “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!” Even our Lord Jesus sang hymns to His Father. In Matthew 26:30 and Mark 14:26. Jesus sang a hymn with the apostles in the Garden of Gethsemane. When Paul and Silas sang hymns of praise in prison, the Lord helped convert the heart of their jailer. (Acts 16:25)
In the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) the church calls on it’s people to sing at Mass. It is a beautiful way to unite the prayers of the church. When we sing the Sanctus (Holy, Holy) we are even called to join in with the Angels and Saints as we pray.
But, most importantly, we sing because we are a joy-filled people. How could we not be? God has so much love for us, that He sacrificed His Son for our sake. How could that not inspire a joy-filled sound to come forth from us? Let’s live our faith and our liturgy.
