Text Box: LITURGY NEWS

So, have you ever heard the expression “They who sing pray twice”? It was said by St. Augustine. Would you like the opportunity to pray twice at Mass? How about joining the choir. The choir is such a special part of our liturgy.  But, where does the choir originate and why do we need it? The Jewish people used choirs in their worship, which is where early Christians drew their inspiration. Unison choir singing in the church can be traced back to the 4th century during the time of St. Ambrose and it continued through the 8th century with St. Gregory (Gregorian Chant). Later in the late Middle Ages, polyphonic music began to take shape in the church and called for members of the choir to sing in harmony. Today we continue this tradition of polyphony. While the music has changed over the years; the primary function of the choir has always remained the same.  That is, ultimately, to praise God through song. Of course the role of the choir is similar to the role of the cantor.  Sometimes the choir may perform a sacred work without the assembly to help lift up the congregation by enjoying the beauty that God gave us in Word and song. After Labor Day weekend the choir here at Assumption will begin again.  I hope that you would consider joining the choir and help enhance our liturgies with the beauty of the sung word. We will rehearse every Sunday at 9:15am and at 11:00am.  I hope you will consider it.  Let’s live our faith and our liturgies together.
