Text Box: LITURGY NEWS

Soon, we return to a 12:15 P.M. Mass on Sundays.   With that in mind, this is a call once again to those who would like to help build the ministry of the cantor here at Assumption. How does the cantor enhance the liturgy and why do we need one? The ministry of the cantor has a rich tradition in our church.  The cantor was solely a clerical role in the early church. This role today may of course be carried out by a lay person. The cantor lead the choir and congregation in chanting prayers and in Psalmody. Today, this is what the General Instruction of the Roman Missal has to say “There should be a cantor or a choir director to lead and sustain the people in the singing. When in fact there is no choir, it is up to the cantor to lead the various songs. The cantor helps us in our sung prayer - not by being a soloist, but by modeling how we should sing our prayers together. The goal of the cantor is to draw people into the joy of singing for our Lord.  The other purpose of the cantor is to proclaim the responsorial psalm. “The cantor of the psalm is to sing the psalm or other biblical song that comes between the readings.” These are big responsibilities.  The cantor is called to clearly sing the psalm.  Diction is very important so that everyone is able to understand the words of the psalm. So, this week I am asking for people who would like to share the joy of singing for the Lord.  If you are interested in becoming a cantor, come see me in the choir loft after mass.  For your questions write to assumption_liturgy@earthlink.net. Let’s live our faith and our liturgies together.
